Be Healthy School Kids / Growing Together - Forsyth County Public Health Department

Who We Are

Both the Growing Together and Be Healthy School Kids programs are housed under the Forsyth County Public Health Department. These programs are part of the Disease Prevention Health Promotion section of the health department.

What We Do

Be Healthy School Kids is a nutrition education program targeting Pre-K through 5th grade students at all Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Elementary Schools. At each school, we strive to reach students, staff, faculty, and parents through bulletin boards, morning announcements, quarterly newsletters, grade-level presentations, School Wellness Committee technical assistance, PTA workshops and/or special events. Family Fitness Nights at each school consist of door prizes, healthy snacks, physical activity stations, games, and community vendors! Growing Together is an afterschool program for 3rd-5th graders that uses gardening as a hands-on tool to promote healthy living, environmental awareness, and lifelong learning. Through engaging, age-appropriate experiences, participants explore gardening, nutrition, and the connection between food, health, and the environment. The program fosters curiosity, teamwork, responsibility, and confidence while helping students develop practical skills and healthy habits they can carry beyond the classroom. By providing meaningful opportunities to learn through experience, Growing Together encourages youth to become active participants in their own well-being and thoughtful stewards of their communities. These two programs utilize volunteers for an array of programs and projects such as assistance with Family Fitness Nights as well as completing gardening projects.
