Contribute to a transformative experience for clinical/medical staff on Tuesday, September 16th from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm by volunteering for our upcoming Poverty Simulation! Adopt one of several essential services roles (banker, social services agent, teacher, health care worker, etc.) to simulate one "month" in poverty for participants who will play the roles of various family members living in poverty. You will be provided with role assignments, instructions for your role, and any other details the week before the simulation takes place. Instructions will also be available day-of. Serving in our food sorting operation gives you a unique opportunity to directly impact the lives of our neighbors. You will help ensure that our partner agencies receive safe, healthy products to distribute to our neighbors who may need a little extra support these days. Over our 18 county service area we have over 500 partner agencies which include organizations like pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters.

Activity Summary:

Volunteers will help sort and pack donated foods. These donations are received from grocery partners, food drives, and more. This food is then made available to our neighbors through our network of food assistance programs. Work may include assembling, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing, bending, stooping, reading small print, working in a high-speed environment.

Shifts are scheduled by demand for groups of 10-12, with open shifts posted as available. If you will need proof of your hours, you must let the front desk know. Roll up your sleeves and get ready to join us in the Clyde Fitzgerald Teaching Garden! Our Community Garden Manager is looking for enthusiastic individuals to work alongside her as we keep our garden healthy.

Serving in our Teaching Garden gives you a unique opportunity to directly impact the lives of our neighbors. As part of this program, you will help our Community Garden Manager with maintenance, which will allow community members to learn about sustainable gardening practices and growing healthy foods at home. Much of the produce grown in this garden can be utilized by our Providence Culinary Training Program. Our Providence Culinary Training Program is a unique workforce development program designed to help our neighbors master new skills to advance their careers and help put food on the table for their families. 

Tasks may include helping to weed, water, prune, plant, and harvest. Volunteers may also assist in preparing educational programs. Tasks vary during and between shifts. Work may include assembling, lifting up to 10 pounds, standing, bending, stooping, exposure to the elements, utilizing tools. No gardening experience necessary.

Across our 18-county service area, we have over 500 partner agencies, which are organizations like pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters. Our warehouse moves about 35-40 tons of food per day, and we need volunteers like you to ensure that movement!

Activity Summary:

Volunteers will help inspect, sort, and pack donated foods. These donations are received from grocery partners, food drives, and more. This food is then made available to our neighbors through our network of food assistance programs. Work may include assembling, lifting up to 30 pounds, standing, bending, stooping, reading small print, working in a high-speed environment.

There is also an opportunity to sort and inspect donated eggs. This opportunity allows for volunteers to be seated in all but the two packaging positions. This does not require lifting more than 5lbs at once. If we do not have eggs to work with, you will assist with the rest of the food sorting operations.

Serving in our Community Meals kitchen gives you a unique opportunity to directly impact the lives of our neighbors. As part of this program, you will help package healthy, well-balanced meals that will be delivered that same day to children, seniors, and neighbors living with disabilities. Currently, our Community Meals team, with the help of volunteers, is packaging 12,000+ meals per week, which goes up to 30,000 meals during summer weeks.

You will help prep, scoop, and box up meals. Tasks vary during and between shifts. No kitchen experience or expertise required. Work may include assembling, lifting up to 10 pounds, standing, bending, stooping, working in a high-speed environment.

Dawson N., Pharmacy Tech Assistant

Become a Pharmacy Tech Assistant! 

Volunteers are needed in the Crisis Control Ministry's pharmacy to serve on a weekly basis at the front window. Volunteers in this role will greet patients coming to pick up their prescription medications, check out their medications from the pharmacy, and answer the pharmacy's main telephone line. You do not need to have a medical background. Our pharmacy staff will answer specific medication questions patients have. Excellent customer service skills are preferred. Ability to stand on your feet for 3 hours. Training will be provided.

Must be able to pass a background check. 

Must be able to commit to volunteering 3 hours every week for at least 3 months.

Marilyn L. Interviewer

Volunteer interviewer's main objective is to gather the neighbor’s information. The interviewer should be respectful, compassionate, and understanding of the client's needs. Crisis Control offers both in-person interviews and phone interviews. As an interviewer, you will hear firsthand from neighbors going through a financial crisis. You will listen to their story and ask them for confidential information so that an informed decision can be made about granting assistance. You will also discuss the neighbor's crisis with a staff member to determine if we can assist the neighbor through their crisis. 

What is a crisis? Crisis Control defines a crisis as something out of the ordinary, unexpected that happens and prevents a household from meeting their essential life needs. Crisis Control Ministry can potentially help residents of Forsyth and Stokes Counties with rent, rent deposits, mortgage, and utility payments as well as food assistance and prescription medications. 

Volunteer Requirements:

The volunteer position is a 3-hour weekly commitment. 

Training is provided.

Help educate youth along the Winston-Salem Forsyth County CROP Hunger Walk route. There are four education stations along the walk route. Volunteers of 2-3 people will man each station. The education station themes are hunger, education, water, and healthcare. Each station will have information about each of these topics around the world. Youth will bring a paper passport to the station when they come to learn. You'll stamp their passport, so they can get a prize when they get back to Corpening Plaza. 

Organizers will verify any community service hours needed. 

Be a Route Guide for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County CROP Hunger Walk. As a Route Guide, you'll help direct walker traffic around the walk route, keep an eye out for safety, call organizers for first aid if needed, etc. Police will be positioned at every traffic light. You'll be given a walk map, a bright orange vest, and signage to hold. 

Organizers will verify any community service hours needed. 

Staff a water station at the Winston-Salem Forsyth County CROP Hunger Walk. You'll help ensure walkers stay well hydrated on the walk. You'll pre-fill water cups and hand them out as walkers go by. Walkers have the option to fill up their own water bottles at the water stations too. 

Organizers will verify any community service hours needed. 

The 2025 CROP Hunger Walk in Forsyth County is more important than ever before for all affiliated non-profits, and we need to extend our reach as far as we can to recruit new organizations who can raise funds all across our community! We need people who are willing to reach out to churches/places of worship, businesses, universities, etc. to recruit new teams to participate in this year's WSFC CROP Hunger Walk on October 19th and maximize our fundraising potential to fight hunger locally and globally. The Youth Group Mentors help our Youth Program Coordinator with implementing plans for meetings and special activities and general supervision of the youth group. The group meets each Saturday, year-round. This is a good opportunity for someone considering a career in ministry, education or social service. You do not have to commit to each week. Most of our mentors come once per month.

The group of primarily low-income Hispanic/Latino teens will spend some time discussing a topic related to Biblical principles, then spend the rest of the meeting on topics related to navigating growing up in the world today. This may include life skills training and opportunities to try new things like drama or a field trip to a ropes course. If the group is small that day, we may simply "hang out" and play games or do crafts. This often provides the best opportunities for one-on-one mentorship.

 Spanish language skills are extremely helpful but not required.

We also need mentors who are available on weekend times other than our usual meeting time because sometimes our field trips happen on a Friday or Saturday night instead.

On Tuesday evenings during the school year come help students in grades K - 3 with their reading skills. You will help them practice letters and skills as well as practice reading with a computer program like RazKids or Starfall. You'll also spend time reading together with one of the many books we have in our library. 

If the student has homework, you will assist with that before moving on to a reading lesson.

Our Kids Club is for older elementary students (grades 4 & 5). It meets every Tuesday evening during the school year. At Kids Club we practice social emotional skills while also trying new things and learning about the world around us. Mentors help run the program, guide children in making wise decisions, controlling emotions, navigating conflict, etc. 

 We are currently recruiting for weekly mentors as well as substitutes to help lead/teach the program for the evening when our regular mentors are unavailable (often they are college students). If you have a special skill or learning experience (juggling? a STEAM activity?) you would like to teach the children for a few sessions in a row or even just one, please be in touch. 

Our Blessings Box outside our community center needs a steady supply of non-perishable food, toiletries, and other small items for our neighbors in need. Certain perishable items are acceptable if they are "shelf stable" for up to 24 hours (for example, bread, some fruits or vegetables), weather permitting. We are also accepting larger items (such as bulk packages) that we will store inside the building which we will place into the box as needed or share with members of the community who we visit (those who may not have transportation to get to the box easily). Please call ahead if you have bulk items (336-724-0850).

The box is small, but in winter it is also nice to put a hat, gloves, or a scarf inside for our neighbors who need an extra bit of warmth. We ask that you NOT put clothing in the box. Thank you.

 Must be at least 15 or 18, based on specific position and/or duties.

Triad RJ is looking for volunteers who share our vision for a more peaceful community through relationships, and want to invest their time in our youth. Impact Circles is a community-based diversion program that provides an alternative response for youth offenders using restorative justice practices. Community Justice Volunteers sit in a circle discussion with the youth and others involved in the incident to collective decide the best ways to hold the youth accountable and provide the support needed for transformation.

Youth are referred to our program from the juvenile court system or through school counselors. For youth facing court charges, successful completion of the program would result in a reduction or elimination of charges.

Currently Impact Circles are conducted on Wednesday eventings. Volunteers are asked to serve 1-2 times per month.

We are especially looking for individuals who can connect well with justice-involved youth, and those who may have overcome a difficult past (Background check is required, but results are evaluated on a case by case basis, so don't let that be a deterrent).

Triad Restorative Justice is looking for an additional van driver to help with transportation for our youth programs as a back-up for when our regular driver is unavailable. The volunteer isn't expected to fill-in for all of these shifts every week, just to be another person we can call on when looking to fill a spot. 

Transportation shifts are:

Background checks and driving records are required. Triad RJ also provides an orientation for all volunteers.

Triad Restorative Justice is looking for someone to provide child-care services and supervision when additional support is needed. This could include times when programs such as Impact Circles or when intakes are taking place. A full background check will be required and it is crucial that individuals have some experience working with children.

This organization need women volunteer mentors to provide positive support to women offenders/ex-offenders. As a mentor, you will start by building a positive rapport, with the woman, while she remains detained at the Forsyth Detention Center, at least two visits per month. Upon the mentee's release, the mentor, will provide support to the woman by assisting in the navigation process of  re-integrating back into the community.  If you have a passion to help "women" offenders/ex-offenders please contact us.

The Forsyth Sponsoring Committee (FSC) seeks to connect with additional leaders of institutions who want to engage their people in developing leadership skills and organizing for justice.  

We are building an “organization of organizations” that will strengthen relationships, develop leaders, conduct listening campaigns reaching thousands of residents, and plan public actions on the issues identified (for example: educational equity, health care, housing, living wages, immigrant rights, environmental justice, etc.).

We invite leaders of congregations, nonprofits, neighborhood and tenants’ associations, cultural associations, sports leagues, and other institutions in the civic sector to learn more and consider joining the 20+ institutions that have already committed to ‘sponsor’ the building of this new organization.  Potential member institutions should be able to build a ‘core team’ of 5-15 leaders who participate regularly and engage your broader membership in the organizing process.

As a first step, interested leaders should arrange a meeting with the local organizer to share your story and hopes for our community and learn more about the IAF organizing effort (please contact Megan Gregory at megan.nciaf@gmail.com or 847-287-7794).  Then, if you think this effort may align with your mission, we can schedule an information session and conversation with your leadership team to discuss further.  

We also have ongoing opportunities to engage in leadership training, relationship-building, and organizing activities (internal strategy meetings, listening sessions to determine collective priorities, research-actions, and public actions on issues identified by the collective).  The organizer can share about upcoming opportunities depending on where the larger collective is in the organizing process.

We have inherited white supremacy’s multigenerational theft of wealth, power, and truth in the body of Christ. While this injustice is not white people’s fault, it is our responsibility as followers of Jesus. To that end, Repair the Body Winston-Salem (RTB) is a grassroots and multi-institutional effort that seeks reparative justice in the church. Furthermore, RTB pursues this goal in partnership with, and under the leadership of, a collective of local Black pastors, Black churches, and Black-led grassroots organizations. Together, we long for racial healing and repair in the body of Christ!

Common Prayer follows in the line of ancient Israel, Jesus, and the early church’s practice of thrice-daily prayer. It also follows in the line of the ‘divine office,’ practiced by many intentional Christian communities throughout history. “And they devoted themselves…to prayer” (Acts 2).

We invite you to engage in School of Love's rhythm of Common Prayer, which is an intentional structure of support that most Christians lack. It occurs every day of the week, Monday-Friday, in a fifteen minute window: Mondays at 7am, Tuesdays at 12:15pm, Wednesdays at 8:30pm, Thursdays at 12:15pm, and Fridays at 12:15pm.

Volunteer Title: SURGE Leader

Major Objective of Project: To enable young people to experience and contribute to the Internship programmed activities which are fun, safe, social and educational (team building, developing self-confidence)

Volunteer Responsibilities:

- To assist in the running of the High School program which has up to 25 young people and 3 staff.

- To communicate with the youth coordinator and other volunteers about weekly programmed activities

- To supervise teenage people and ensure general health & safety and rules of conduct

- To build a rapport with teenage people and listen to their concerns

- To facilitate and participate in games, activities and discussions with high school students

- To assist with necessary programmed set-up and clean-up

- To undertake required record keeping procedures including reporting verbally to supervisor and completing any relevant program forms

Training:

- To participate in support/information meetings and one to one supervision meetings

- Attend relevant training courses/workshops

Time Commitment: 4 hours per week.

Location: Forsyth County Central Library Teen Area 2nd Floor

Days: Monday, Thursday

Supervision: Direct supervision will be given by the Intern Coordinator.
