SLAMM: SUMMER LITERACY ART MUSIC AND MOVEMENT

SLAMM 2026 for Refugee and Immigrant Youth Ages 6-15

SLAMM HIGH SCHOOL VOLUNTEER GOALS: Experience new opportunities for leadership and serving diverse youth.

SLAMM VISION: Refugee youth who are academically supported and inspired to be successful in school and confidently pursuing future individual goals

 SLAMM MISSION: Provide summer literacy and enrichment experiences for refugee and immigrant youth that lead to increased literacy and school success

High school volunteers will have an opportunity to be mentored by college interns while modeling positive leadership and service. SLAMM offers refugee and immigrant youth from Afghanistan, Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo and other countries, opportunities to improve their literacy in a fun, inclusive environment. SLAMM takes place Monday through Friday and intern hours are 8:30am to 1:30pm. The program includes literacy activities, science, technology, soccer, art, crafts, financial literacy, dance, drama, music, Legos, and more.

Assist in Supporting our Community Garden!

NAI is seeking volunteers to serve 2-5 hours per week in our community garden! We are prepping everything and getting ready for planting and sowing seeds through NAI's Garden Caring Group with refugees from all over but especially Afghanistan and Sudan! The garden harvest will be shared directly with our clients.

Support the NAI Food Pantry!

NAI is seeking teams of people to come together and gather food for our food pantry 1-4 times a year. Our goal is to pass out food to our clients once a week. A team of individuals interested in supporting this effort can gather 150 of one item from the following list: 

Rice (prefer jasmine or basmati)

Dried beans (prefer pintos, chickpeas, red lentils)

Pasta

Couscous

Flour

Cornmeal

Oil

Peanuts/peanut butter

Sugar/salt/spices

Dried dates

Dry/shelf stable milk

Box of tissues

Cleaning/laundry supplies

Hair/skin products such as shampoo, lotion, body wash, hand soap, solid style deodorant

SLAMM COLLEGE INTERN GOALS: To experience new opportunities for leadership, management and community while leading volunteers and participants in learning, creativity and leadership. 

SLAMM VISION: Refugee youth who are academically supported and inspired to be successful in school and confidently pursuing future individual goals

 SLAMM MISSION: Provide summer literacy and enrichment experiences for refugee and immigrant youth that lead to increased literacy and school success

New Arrivals Institute (NAI) is offering a limited number of stipends for college interns to plan, lead and manage a summer literacy-based program under the direction of NAI staff. Interns will also mentor high school volunteers while modeling positive leadership and service. SLAMM offers refugee and immigrant youth from Afghanistan, Sudan, and South America, opportunities to improve their literacy in a fun, inclusive environment. SLAMM takes place Monday through Friday and intern hours are 8:30am to 1:30pm. Interns will benefit from extraordinary leadership and service opportunity. The program includes literacy activities, science, technology, soccer, art, crafts, financial literacy, dance, drama, music, Legos, and more.

HELP NEEDED WITH REFUGEE and IMMIGRANT INFANTS THROUGH AGE 5!

Enjoy one day each week assisting with Infants, toddlers or 3-5 year olds, 9:30am-12:30pm, year round as you are available. Parents are on-site learning English.

Do not under-estimate the power of this volunteer opportunity to welcome refugees and immigrants to the US who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their families! Helping young children become ready for Kindergarten is the same as helping them become successful students which helps the entire family! 

Assist Instructors teaching newly English to refugee and immigrant adults!

Volunteer assistants are needed once per week, 9:30am to 12:30pm at NAI near downtown Greensboro. This is an easy and fun way to get to know and help our newest refugee and immigrant neighbors become independent.
