City government, local businesses, and residents can work together to protect our water resources. The Water Resources Department supports two volunteer programs: Adopt-a-Stream and Drain Marker. We encourage residents to get involved and help make a difference in Greensboro together.

What Can Adopt-a-Stream Achieve?

Who Can Adopt-a-Stream?
Anyone can adopt a stream. Families, neighborhoods, organizations, businesses, civic groups, churches, schools, and youth groups have all adopted streams in Greensboro.

What Will Your Adopt-a-Stream Group Do?
Your group will be responsible for facilitating a stream cleanup at least twice a year for a minimum of two years. The City will place a sign bearing your group's name along the road by your adopted stream segment.

Not ready to adopt a stream? Don't worry. You or your group can still make a positive impact by participating in a Clean-a-Creek cleanup without the commitment to adopt.

*Participants must be ages 10 and up. Children under 16 must be supervised at all times by an adult.

*Participants must complete the Liability Waiver Online Form prior to each event and program. All participants under 18 must have their guardian complete the form.

Choose a section of the City and hit those streets to glue signs (drain markers) to storm drain covers. The markers serve as a visual reminder that only rainwater should go down these drains.  The time commitment for this program varies and is based on volunteer availability, however, a minimum of 20 markers is required per every two people in a group.  All the supplies are provided to you for this fun and easy project that has lasting value.

Definition of Stormwater: The runoff of rain and other water sources that washes over impervious surfaces such as roadways, collecting chemicals, oil, and other pollutants, which then flows into our storm drains. What enters our storm drains is not treated like our wastewater water is; it goes directly into our streams, many of which eventually drain into our lakes.

Community Service hours can be earned at various parks and recreation locations which will be determined by the Volunteer Coordinator. Community Service volunteers must complete an online volunteer application and background check prior to receiving placement. The City of Greensboro does not accept volunteers who have been convicted of, pled guilty or no contest to all sexual offenses and violent felonies (regardless of the amount of time since offense).

Do you enjoy organic vegetable gardening, or want to learn more about it, while helping your community? We are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of a vegetable growing and donation project, at the Keeley Park Community Garden. We will be planting a section of the garden specifically for donation purposes, with the goal of providing fresh vegetables to area food pantries, to distribute to community members in need.

This project will run from May – November, with volunteer tasks to include planting, weeding, watering, mulching, as well as harvesting and distribution of vegetables.

This is a great way to get involved with addressing food insecurity in our community, and to get hands-on training in growing healthy, organic vegetables.

Previous gardening experience is not required to participate – just a willingness to get your hands dirty to help neighbors in need. Training will be provided at each workday.

Greensboro Parks and Recreation seeks volunteer groups of up to 15 volunteers to assist with landscaping projects at various facilities. We will provide supplies and any needed equipment, but volunteers should be prepared to work outside. For more information, email Alexandra.Zaleski@greensboro-nc.gov. 

Court-Ordered Community Service hours can be earned at various locations which will be determined by the Volunteer Coordinator. Same-day placement is not available. Hours and availability may vary given particular needs.

Do you enjoy gardening? Do you want to help keep Greensboro's public gardens looking beautiful? We are looking for a volunteer who is interested in devoting a couple of hours per week, as needed, to our gardens throughout the City. This is a great way to get outside, stay active, and give back to your community. Volunteers needed between 8am and 5pm Monday through Thursday.

Greensboro Parks and Recreation's Adopt-a-Street program is a great way to give back to your community in a way that fits into your busy schedule. We ask our volunteers to clean their adopted street 4 times per year or once every 3 months if possible. All supplies will be provided to you such as vests/bags/gloves/hand grabber to assist with your clean up day.

Our Parks and Recreation department supports volunteers with the knowledge and experience needed to enhance public spaces. Volunteers of all ages, individuals, small or large groups, and corporations who want to improve their community are welcomed.

Whether you're volunteering for a day or for a decade, your service helps our local government ensure that Greensboro is a desirable place to work, live and play.
