Position Summary:  

Read with Kindergarten through 3rd grade students with a focus on reading improvement:

Virtual learning (via Zoom) or In-Person (Afterschool hours) 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p:m. (Partner Agency location)

Positive Wellness Alliance is a small non-profit that serves people who are HIV+.  We are the only organization in the Triad area tasked with exclusively serving this population.

Help older adults with yard maintenance. Assist with mowing, weed eating, weed pulling, flowerbed planting, hedge trimming and other light yard work. This volunteer lawn care goes a long way toward helping them remain safely in their homes and meets a need they are no longer able to accomplish on their own. Senior Services needs volunteers to deliver hot, nutritious meals to older adults enrolled in our Meals-on-Wheels program. Volunteer opportunities are flexible. Deliver any day, Monday through Friday, between 9:45 am and noon, once per week, once per month, or anything in between. Delivery routes take about 90 minutes. The Youth Group Mentors help our Youth Program Coordinator with implementing plans for meetings and special activities and general supervision of the youth group. The group meets each Saturday, year-round. This is a good opportunity for someone considering a career in ministry, education or social service. You do not have to commit to each week. Most of our mentors come once per month.

The group of primarily low-income Hispanic/Latino teens will spend some time discussing a topic related to Biblical principles, then spend the rest of the meeting on topics related to navigating growing up in the world today. This may include life skills training and opportunities to try new things like drama or a field trip to a ropes course. If the group is small that day, we may simply "hang out" and play games or do crafts. This often provides the best opportunities for one-on-one mentorship.

 Spanish language skills are extremely helpful but not required.

We also need mentors who are available on weekend times other than our usual meeting time because sometimes our field trips happen on a Friday or Saturday night instead.

On Tuesday evenings during the school year come help students in grades K - 3 with their reading skills. You will help them practice letters and skills as well as practice reading with a computer program like RazKids or Starfall. You'll also spend time reading together with one of the many books we have in our library. 

If the student has homework, you will assist with that before moving on to a reading lesson.

Our Kids Club is for older elementary students (grades 4 & 5). It meets every Tuesday evening during the school year. At Kids Club we practice social emotional skills while also trying new things and learning about the world around us. Mentors help run the program, guide children in making wise decisions, controlling emotions, navigating conflict, etc. 

 We are currently recruiting for weekly mentors as well as substitutes to help lead/teach the program for the evening when our regular mentors are unavailable (often they are college students). If you have a special skill or learning experience (juggling? a STEAM activity?) you would like to teach the children for a few sessions in a row or even just one, please be in touch. 

Our Blessings Box outside our community center needs a steady supply of non-perishable food, toiletries, and other small items for our neighbors in need. Certain perishable items are acceptable if they are "shelf stable" for up to 24 hours (for example, bread, some fruits or vegetables), weather permitting. We are also accepting larger items (such as bulk packages) that we will store inside the building which we will place into the box as needed or share with members of the community who we visit (those who may not have transportation to get to the box easily). Please call ahead if you have bulk items (336-724-0850).

The box is small, but in winter it is also nice to put a hat, gloves, or a scarf inside for our neighbors who need an extra bit of warmth. We ask that you NOT put clothing in the box. Thank you.

We are seeking tutors to help our middle and high school students with math, reading, ESOL, passing the GED, and/or general study habits. In addition, on days when students have no homework, we need folks who are willing to mentor youth by spending time with them, offering a listening ear, words of wisdom, and practical advice when needed. Our students are looking for help with things like: applying for jobs, navigating relationships, and managing personal finances.

The group will meet Thursday evenings during the school year and occasionally during the summer.

Guardian ad Litem (GAL) volunteers serve as court-appointed advocates and the voice for children in the juvenile court system.  GALs do an independent investigation into the circumstances of these children’s lives, facilitate their needs being met by helping locate community resources, and advocate that those services be put into place. Furthermore, we attend court hearings on behalf of the child to report to the court what we feel is in a child’s best interest concerning their life.  We do so until these children are out of the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services and into a safe, permanent home. 

GALs visit with the child once per month and make contact on a regular basis with the other pertinent people in their life to help advocate for their best interest.  Most GALs spend 12-15 hours per month performing their duties as a court-appointed advocate. Most of the time spent volunteering is mostly flexible and built around the GAL’s schedule.

HORSEPOWER Therapeutic Learning Center needs volunteers! Do you love horses? Do you love helping people? We need all types of volunteer help at our facility in High Point. Our volunteers typically perform one or more of several roles, such as side walking, or helping riders to stay on horseback and monitoring their safety, helping with barn cleaning and maintenance, and helping with horse care and handling in the barn and on the HORSEPOWER grounds. Enjoy one day each week assisting with Infants, toddlers or 3-5 year olds, 9:30-12:30, year round as you are available. Parents are on-site learning English in local church near downtown Greensboro.

New Arrivals Institute (NAI) is offering a stipend for college interns to plan, lead and manage a summer literacy-based program under the direction of NAI staff. Interns will also mentor high school volunteers while modeling positive leadership and service. SLAMM offers refugee and immigrant youth from Afghanistan, Sudan, and South America, opportunities to improve their literacy in a fun, inclusive environment. SLAMM takes place Monday through Friday and intern hours are 8:30am to 1:30. Interns will benefit from extraordinary leadership and service opportunity. The program includes literacy activities, science, technology, soccer, art, crafts, financial literacy, dance, drama, music, Legos, and more.

NAI  is seeking volunteers to serve 2-5 hours per week in our community garden! We are prepping everything and getting ready for planting and sowing seeds through NAI's Garden Caring Group with refugees from all over but especially Afghanistan and Sudan!

Are you interested in helping the museum with field trips?  The Greensboro History Museum is currently accepting potential volunteers for our Docent Roster.  Help elementary school children learn about the history of Greensboro and North Carolina by manning one of the six stations during the 2.5hr field trips.  These stations cover a wide margin of history from Colonial Woodworking to Miss Lina’s Schoolroom.

This is a morning program and it runs from 9:00 am-12:00 pm Tuesday through Friday.

If you are interested you will be trained and shadow one of the field trips ahead of time.  

It is required to volunteer for at least two field trips per month during the school year (a total of 6 hours per month).

Red Cross Disaster Relief volunteers support people affected by home fires, storms, and countless other crises. As more people rely on the Red Cross for help, the need for compassionate Disaster Relief volunteers has never been greater.

We are actively recruiting and training for local, year-round response and for large-scale disaster response occurring anywhere in the country. Volunteers can volunteer in multiple positions, or just one.

DISASTER RELIEF VOLUNTEERS

Year-Round Disaster Action Team (DAT) Member: Provide year-round, in-person emergency response to individuals impacted by local disasters (primarily home fires). Volunteers provide emergency financial assistance, emotional support, and connection to Red Cross and community resources to support client recovery.

Disaster Shelter Volunteer: During large-scale disasters, support the day-to-day activities within a shelter. This may include reception, registration, feeding, or other areas with a shelter.

A biweekly, multi-church and community partnership youth outreach program helping kids in the Brownsboro Road area achieve academic and life success.  The partnership includes Awake Church, Winston Salem First, and others under the Fiduciary of Love Out Loud.

We are currently meeting at an apartment complex to meet with kids for a few hours playing games, sharing a meal, and having conversations about Jesus and life. Such topics have included the power of words, forgiveness, boundaries, prayer, thankfulness, and more.

Individuals are needed to assist with our weekly meal prep and distribution of our community meals.  

Tutors needed for academic enrichment component of our STEM after-school program.  Must have be 18 & older with HS Diploma and at least 1 year working with school-age children.  Teacher skills preferred but not required.  College students, retired school teachers preferred. Hours needed Mon - Thurs 3pm - 6pm.

Each Tuesday from 9:00-12:30pm, throughout the year we provide food, clothing and diapers to community members.

The Greensboro History Museum is in need of motivated, customer service minded people to be the "face" of the museum.  This role is a 2.5 or 2-hour volunteer role, Tuesday - Friday, sitting at the Lindsey Desk at the entrance to the Greensboro History Museum.  You must explain the rules, orient, and help visitors to the museum when they first enter.  You must be comfortable speaking to people of all ages.

AFTER-SCHOOL TUTORS NEEDED FOR REFUGEE STUDENTS ages 5-18!

Get to know a newly arrived refugee student and family in this unique After School Tutoring program taking place at the home of students! You get to tutor once per week (or more if you wish) for 1 to 2  hours between 5:00 and 8:00pm scheduled at your convenience. Training and on-going support provided. This is a great way to impact newly arrived refugee families and assist the children in finding success in Schools!

Program Pals provide programming which gives our campers the opportunity to try new things and push beyond their comfort zone. Volunteers in this role are assigned to oversee a program area such as Arts & Crafts, Woodshop, Boating and Fishing. As a Program Pal you will join a family when your program area is closed so you can continue to experience all of the magic of camp.

You could also work with members of our yearly staff in a couple different areas as well. We offer the opportunity to volunteer in the barn to help out with our adaptive horseback riding and animal adventure programs. Our full-time barn team will give you the training you need to help fulfill your duties such as: leading horses in our arena, sidewalking, handling all our animals (horses, goats, llama, donkeys, cow), and many hands on tasks around the barn. The other option is working with our kitchen team and assisting with meal time set up and clean up. Our program team would walk through with you how mealtime works, but then then the kitchen team would go more into detail of your role and expectations. Both positions will get orientation time before families arrive and will also get assigned a family to work with whenever you are not at your program area. We do have an age requirement of 18, and also being a high school graduate as well.

Your role is very important because as the initial face of Victory Junction and the family’s constant representation, you have a major part in the feel of camp and the community that is established. Help needed! Cycle Recycle needs a couple of volunteers with trucks or vans to be available to carry bikes on occasion. We are receiving bike donations throughout the week.  We need someone who can run point to call donor and arrange the bike drop off or pick up from their home.  Helpful to have a van when the donor has multiple bikes.  

Drive older adults to their medical appointments, errands, grocery shopping or activities using your own vehicle (mileage reimbursed quarterly). You can drive as often as several times a week, or as little as once or twice a month.  You can choose your days, time, length of trips and area of the community where you would like to drive.  All volunteering occurs weekdays between 9 am and 5 pm.

Spend about one hour in the afternoon straightening up our book processing center after volunteers have left.  Load boxes of books onto trailer (using dolly), empty trash, sweep, break down boxes, move/stack boxes of books. 

Requires some lifting.  Volunteer one or more afternoons per week. This is a great opportunity for a Crosby scholar or other high school student looking for some regular volunteer hours.

Many older adults who live independently are unable to get to the grocery store. We are in need of drivers who can take one of our participants grocery shopping twice per month using their own vehicle (mileage is reimbursed quarterly). A shopping trip generally takes 1 1/2 -2 hours. You may be assigned a person who lives in your area; all participants are required to shop at a grocery store close to their home.  In most cases, you will need to help the participant get the groceries in and out of the car. This is a great opportunity to build a relationship with someone new!

Many older adults could use a hand with getting things done around the house. If you can provide small acts of labor for minor home repairs, i.e carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring and various type of yard work, then this volunteer activity is for you. Congregational groups, youth groups, business teams, etc. are also welcome to give us a call.

HELP NEWLY ARRIVED REFUGEE AND IMMIGRANT ADULTS LEARN ENGLISH!

Assist English instructor in educating refugees and immigrants learning English. Volunteer assistants are needed once per week, 9:30am to 12:30pm at NAI near downtown Greensboro. This is an easy and fun way to get to know and help our newest refugee and immigrant neighbors.

We need caring, compassionate adults to help with homework, read and assist with arts and crafts programs. We are looking for volunteers with a passion and compassion for children. You do not have to excel in any subject just an understanding that these children need someone to care about them. We need caring volunteer that can be sensitive to adults and children experiencing homelessness.

Volunteers must be friendly, understanding, and courteous. Must be relational with both individuals served and staff, a team player. Center of Hope volunteers must be nonjudgmental, always having the Center of Hope resident’s wellbeing in mind.

We provide dinner for our families 7 nights a week. Bringing a cooking group is an amazing way to show the support of the community and it truly makes our House feel like home.

Dinner groups can have up to 10 participants and are responsible for planning a menu and bringing all the necessary ingredients/ supplies to the House, and then using our kitchen and equipment to cook (all prep work and cooking must be done here at the Ronald McDonald House and cannot be done at home). 

Groups typically cook for 35 (but you will receive an exact count on the Monday of your cooking date). After cooking, your group will portion out meals in individual to-go containers and label them with the contents and date (date labels and to-go containers are provided by us).

The Servant Center is looking for volunteers to pick-up food donations at designated local grocery stores for Servant House.( Servant House is transitional living for disabled veterans facing homelessnes. The food donations we receive, provides the food we need to prepare meals for the 21 disabled veterans that we serve.)

One of our greatest needs are Spanish-speaking interpreters to register clients with the food pantry. We serve several hundred Hispanic families each month with food and each family needs to register when they arrive.

Clients will present their food bank cards and the volunteer will use either a tablet or phone to record the visit with the food bank. Clients that do not have food bank card will need to provide their information to receive a food bank card on their first visit.

We will provide a training prior to any food pantry distribution to help understand the process. As a new volunteer in this capacity, you will most likely start off by registering only 10 clients as you learn the system.

Cycle Recycle is in the process of developing social media bullets that tell our story and invite people to join us by donating a bike, volunteering at our warehouse with operations and donating money.  We have begun videotaping short interviews with our partners and team.  An advisor would help us to be intentional and focused on the mechanics of best practices with our advisory team in communicating our story to the general public and target groups.  We are about to launch an initiative to solicit funds from potential donors.  We would like someone to help us with that who has experience.

 We need volunteers who have a passion for serving God in the community.

   Cycle Recycle is growing by leaps and bounds.  We have a passionate and dynamic team that is committed to our vision of providing bikes to kids in under-resourced areas of Winston-Salem and connecting with them to teach bike safety education.  We operate all year, but especially focus on providing bikes at Gift Mart.  We are partnering with several nonprofits and community outreach agencies to be open to how we can make a difference with families and kids by promoting the joy and freedom of cycling.  

    We are about to embark on a fundraising initiative that will also reach throughout the community to engage volunteers to join in our mission.  We have events scheduled throughout the year.  We need someone who loves working with people to work with our team to help organize events, help recruit or encourage volunteers and add to our ministry the joy and empowerment we want to spread throughout our city.  You will want to be present at many of our Wrench workshops as you are able.  It would be helpful if you were connected with much of the cycling network already or you are talented in making these connections.

We accept gently used children and adult bikes. We value every bike donation to us in love to pass along to someone who needs a bike.  We provide refurbished bikes to persons through our community partners.

Cycle/Recycle continues to receive donations of gently used bikes, which are stored in our warehouse.  We hold regularly scheduled Wrench workshops to repair the bikes to provide throughout the community during the year.  We need volunteers who are able to do minor repairs such as changing tires/tubes, adjusting brakes, doing tune ups and other basic skills.  We have professional mechanics at each workshop to assist you and teach bike repair.  Volunteers need their own tools.  Teens may have the opportunity to wash down bikes to get then ready. Training on CNC machines, 3D printers, Screen printing equipment, and more is available so that you can realize your vision.  Your dedication to bringing fresh ideas to our display strategy will maintain our makerspace's cutting-edge and inspiring atmosphere, fostering a vibrant and successful creative community.

Moving books from the donation pod in our parking lot into the book processing center.  Requires lifting boxes of books and using a dolly.  This needs to be done a few times per week, come regularly or volunteer for a day here and there.

Our Re:dress Clothing Boutique began in March 2011 with the goal of providing gently used or new clothing items to families in Winston-Salem and the surrounding communities. As we provide these clothing items, each shopper is respected as a unique individual worthy of dignity and respect. Hope restored is our ultimate goal.

The Re:dress program is open to everyone. Any individual desiring assistance, regardless of income status, may browse our store free of charge. One life changed, and one smile restored is the only reward we look for. Broken hearts set free by love will make a difference in any family’s future.

Group project:  The grounds around our building need some TLC!  There are two large areas that need trimming and weed clean up; one faces the street and could also use some beautification.

What do I need to wear when volunteering?  Please wear clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty. NO OPEN TOE OR HEEL SHOES WILL BE ALLOWED! (ie: flipflops, sandals, etc).

What is the ReStore?  The Habitat ReStore sells gently-used furniture, appliances, fixtures, surplus building materials, and other items at 25-75% off their regular retail prices.  All proceeds are used to build affordable Habitat homes in our community.

What will I do when volunteering in the ReStore?  When volunteering in the ReStore, you might help with accepting, moving and preparing donations for the sales floor while also assisting the ReStore staff and customers.

We are in need of volunteers to package prepared food, label, and load them in various refrigerators around the community.

Do you enjoy organic vegetable gardening, or want to learn more about it, while helping your community? We are looking for volunteers to help with all aspects of a vegetable growing and donation project, at the Keeley Park Community Garden. We will be planting a section of the garden specifically for donation purposes, with the goal of providing fresh vegetables to area food pantries, to distribute to community members in need.

This project will run from May – November, with volunteer tasks to include planting, weeding, watering, mulching, as well as harvesting and distribution of vegetables.

This is a great way to get involved with addressing food insecurity in our community, and to get hands-on training in growing healthy, organic vegetables.

Previous gardening experience is not required to participate – just a willingness to get your hands dirty to help neighbors in need. Training will be provided at each workday.

Volunteers help to organize and sort nonperishable food items collected from the community as well as assist consumers in securing needed food items.  Volunteers should have good customer service orientation, be able to stand, bend, stoop and lift bags/or boxes that may weigh 35-45 pounds.  Be able to work with diverse populations. 

We are seeking people with daytime, weekday availability and a passion for working with children. In this role, you work as a team with a Wish Specialist (Make-A-Wish staff) to determine a child’s wish ideas and capture all the important elements to give them a truly life transforming wish experience. You are also responsible for creating meaningful boosters for the child to accentuate the excitement of the wish! 

Requirements for a volunteer role:

Triad RJ is looking for volunteers who share our vision for a more peaceful community through relationships, and want to invest their time in our youth. Impact Circles is a community-based diversion program that provides an alternative response for youth offenders using restorative justice practices. Community Justice Volunteers sit in a circle discussion with the youth and others involved in the incident to collective decide the best ways to hold the youth accountable and provide the support needed for transformation.

Youth are referred to our program from the juvenile court system or through school counselors. For youth facing court charges, successful completion of the program would result in a reduction or elimination of charges.

Currently Impact Circles are conducted on Wednesday eventings. Volunteers are asked to serve 1-2 times per month.

We are especially looking for individuals who can connect well with justice-involved youth, and those who may have overcome a difficult past (Background check is required, but results are evaluated on a case by case basis, so don't let that be a deterrent).

The volunteer isn't expected to fill-in for all of these shifts every week, just to be another person we can call on when looking to fill a spot.
